PROCESS WORK

From the initial sketch teacher chose, I changed the perspective of the sketch based on teacher's suggestions. Thus, I made a happy ghost thats flying high in a group of creepy looking ghosts. Besides that, I added the word Ghost Parade onto the top of the sketch.

Sketching Process (New Sketch)

I started off with drawing the happy ghost as I already have and idea of a ghost with rounder edges and hands for its form. Besides that, I thought it could determine how the other ghosts should be designed to help me create a visual direction.

Figure 2.1 Screenshot of happy ghost sketch, Week 6 (10/03/2026)

After that I drew random circles around the happy ghost to roughly determine the placement of the scary looking ghosts. Then, following the placements I drew some ghosts at the front row of the sketch. For the facial features of the other ghosts, I focused on giving them more sharp edges for their mouth and sometimes their eyes.

But I thought the ghost wasn't really creepy enough and their shapes are similar with the happy ghost. Thus, I went on Pinterest to try to find inspirations to create more creepy looking ghosts with different body shapes and I came across this post. I liked how the shoulders looked from the ghosts and how the limbs were long and skinny which creates an creepy looking creature.

Thus, I revised the looks of the ghosts to look like they have long, skinny limbs and some with heads shaped more rounded with a thin neck that looks like an alien. I also created one that has a hunchback form to create some diversity within the creepy ghosts.

Then with the ghosts drawn I copy and pasted  every ghosts and placed them onto different parts of the sketch to create a crowd. Besides that, I also distorted the shapes of the ghosts to have more variety to avoid them all to look the same.

After that, I left an empty space at the top of the sketch as I wanted to place the words there. I also want to make slight adjustments based on the artwork I chose.

Colouring

After receiving teachers feedback, I proceeded with deciding the base colour of the background. I went around Pinterest to find inspiration for the colour palette. I came across this palette and liked its green colour scheme, so I decided to use it as a reference for my colouring.

Then I coloured the the background using a textured brush to make the artwork less flat.

After that, I tried with ways to colour the creepy ghosts. I started with the bottom right ghost and used the lighter colours from the colour palette.

Figure 2.9 Trying out colours, Week 7 (16/03/2026)

But it was too light for my liking, and I planed for the happy ghost to be lighter than the others. I couldn't decide on how I wanted the others to look, so instead I focus on colouring the happy ghost.

But I didn't like how the lighter outlines makes the ghost looks too blurry. So, I decided to Make the outlines dark.

Then, I tried colouring the creepy ghost beside the happy one. But this time, I lowered the opacity of the green for the body and remained the lighter green outlines. I also changed the facial features of the ghost to be the same as the happy ghost.

After that I proceeded with colouring the rest the same way. I also decided to make the hands of the creepy ghost to all be placed down, so that the happy ghost can be further emphasised by their pose too.

Then, I added trees on the top background of the artwork, as I wanted the ghost to seem to appear from the woods and it also can make the background more interesting and less flat.

After that, I went on Pinterest to find some reference for the typography for the word "Ghost Parade".

Then, I wrote the wordings with the same colours as the happy ghost (yellow) on the top left corner of the art work.

After receiving the teacher’s feedback, I adjusted the placement of the words and erased more green spaces where there were no ghosts. I also enhanced the happy ghost by adding a glowing effect with a soft brush and introduced splatter textures along the edges and between the ghosts to create more visual interest.

FINAL OUTCOME

Ghost Parade

Design Decisions
In my artwork titled “Ghost Parade” shows a crowd of ghost figures with different shapes and sizes gathered closely together, creating a condense atmosphere. Most of the ghosts are coloured in muted green tones with dark and creepy facial features, each expressing different emotions such as sadness, anger or eeriness. They blend into one another cause of their similar colour palette (green) and loose outlines, forming a unified crowd. In contrast, a single bright yellow happy ghost is positioned slightly off-centre that stands out prominently from the rest. This character has a soft glow and features a cheerful expression with a raised arm, giving it a welcoming and lively presence. Unlike the surrounding ghosts, which appear more static, this figure conveys warmth and positivity. Besides that, the dark green background further enhances the contrast, drawing attention to the glowing character. There is also a faint dark illustration of the woods at the background, which signifies that the ghosts emerged from there. The title “Ghost Parade” is displayed at the top in bold and yellow typography, matching the colour of the highlighted ghost and reinforcing its significance within the composition.

Meaning/Purpose
This artwork conveys that it is fine to be different within a crowded environment. The dense arrangement of ghost figures creates a sense of collectiveness, where most of the characters appear visually similar due to their muted green tones and overlapping figures. The brightly glowing yellow ghost stands out distinctly from the rest while not seeming out of place, it instead acts as a focal point that draws attention in a positive way. While the surrounding ghosts display creepier and more varied expressions, the highlighted character appears cheerful and welcoming, suggesting the character is confident in its uniqueness.

Besides that, the contrast in colour emphasises on individuality rather than isolation, portraying that standing out does not necessarily mean being disconnected from the group but it can be something that can coexist harmoniously within a crowd with the repeated green ghost figures symbolising conformity, while the glowing character represents self-expression and acceptance. Furthermore, the use of soft yellow glow around the main character creates a sense of warmth, reinforcing the idea that being different can bring light and positivity into a negative environment.

Design Principles Used
Firstly, there is the usage of the Gestalt Theory, namely the Principle of Similarity which can be seen with the repeated green ghost figures and light green outline with creepy facial features, making them appear as a unified group. The colour contrast between green and yellow is prominent in this artwork with the dull green tones dominating the composition, while the bright yellow colour breaks the visual pattern and immediately drawing attention of the viewers. This creates clear visual separation while maintaining overall cohesion within the composition. Besides that, the illustration shows emphasis with the bright yellow colour of the main character matching the yellow words at the top. The pose of the ghost with its hands up also differs from the crowd whom are standing upright, thus drawing more attention to the happy ghost. Furthermore, there is an asymmetrical balance to the artwork, as the placement of the single highlighted ghost is not centrally aligned, and the surrounding ghost figures are unevenly distributed.

Repetition is shown with the repeating green ghost shapes and facial features, reinforcing a sense of uniformity within the crowd. Movement is created with the dense arrangement of figures guides the viewer’s eye across the composition with all of the characters facing the front it makes the viewers assume that they are moving towards the bottom of the artwork. Moreover, the harmony and unity in this artwork are not particularly strong, as the words at the top are placed very close to the edge of the artwork with no matching elements on the bottom to balance the composition. However, some harmony can be seen through the consistent outline style, limited colour palette (green & yellow) and repeated character designs that visually connect the artwork to form unity. Lastly, the word and image is evident in the title “Ghost Parade” at the top, which directly relates to the clustered arrangement of ghost figures below. The typography matches the colour of the highlighted character, reinforcing its importance and connecting the visual narrative of individuality within a group setting.

FEEDBACK

Week 6
The sketch is good. The ghost needs to be emphasised more using colours later on for the colouring process, and the typography used for the wordings can be further explored.

Week 7
The artwork is good, but the wordings can be stretched and placed across the top to avoid the top left side of the artwork to look too cramped.
