Task 2B : Conceptual Photo Manipulation

LECTURE

This week is consultation week, so lectures and tutorials were held for giving feedback and answering questions if any. In the lecture however, teacher did show us previous student work to give us an idea of how we could continue on with our task.

PROCESS WORK

I proceeded with the photo shooting of the lint roll & speaker idea based on the feedback teacher gave. I had a simple setup as I just taped a white mahjong paper to a movable shelf I had and placed a cardboard box on the bottom of the mahjong paper to act as a base. I also used the phone stand I had and used the living room lights and covered one light with paper to dim the strong lighting.

When taking the photos using my phone, I tweaked the exposure of my camera to be higher ( +1.3). I started with the lint roller.

Figure 2.1 First attempt at photographing lint roll, Week 7 (08/11/2025)

In the first attempt I laid the lint roll flat on the surface and I realised that I couldn't see much if the angle is eye levelled. So, I adjusted the the angle to be from the top and I didn't really liked the outcome as there was a awkward white line on the background. Besides, if the roll was switched to the speaker, the speaker wouldn't be evident in this angle.

So, I tied a white thread to the lint roll and lifted it to photograph it in a eye level angle instead. I also tried flash to see the effect of it,

Although the angle was good, I didn't like how the flash made the photo yellowish and darker on the background. So, in the end I just took one with the camera exposure increased and also took the photo for the speaker too.

After that, I tried to add texture to the photo using fabric that I had in my house first by adding a plain gray mat to the base.

Then, I tried another base that was more striking by using a orange fabric.

FEEDBACK

From the feedback in tutorial session (05/11/2025), Mr. Fitri suggested me to choose the lint roll & speaker or tennis ball & lemon ideas from the sketch.

REFLECTION

For this week, I had to apply the knowledge of last week when photographing the products. I learned how to use lighting I had and experiment with different background textures to create appealing looking pictures. In addition, I gained composition skills from tweaking the angles of the objects and even the fabrics. Besides, it was interesting to view all the minor changes in details if the lighting or angle was changed. It was overall a fun process.
