Task 2B : Conceptual Photo Manipulation

LECTURES

In week 6 lecture, teacher introduced us to the new task that involves having a product photoshoot in our respective homes and manipulating the 2 objects taken into a final product.

In the lecture, he explain that we don't need full professional setup to have a photoshoot and provided a few alternatives to what we have to equip for a photoshoot. He also explain the importance of lighting in photoshoot and a few light source we could use in our own photoshoot. (natural light / artificial lighting)

Equipments for photoshoot
- Camera / smartphones
- Tripod
- Lights
- Preferably white background
- Optional extra textures ( fabric, wood, etc. )

He also showed us a couple of videos of people doing DIY photoshoots in their homes and some photoshoot techniques when doing your own. From the videos, I found that there are a few angles that we could explore when we are taking the photos :

- Eye-level shots
- 45 degree angle
- Top down / Flat lay
- Close-ups / Macro shots

In addition, he also showed us how we could search for reference in google to gain some inspiration for our own products.

First Part: Research

In this part, we are required to do a reference mood board, write a summary of our ideas and make sketches for them.

This 3 photos are chosen as the ideas were interesting for me and it also involves products that I had in my house. From that, I begin to search around my house to find objects that could be included in the idea line up.

Summary of My Ideas

1. Mug & Toilet paper - idea based on the reference found on Pinterest
2. Ukulele & Peanut - idea based on the reference in Pinterest but instead of an avocado, peanut is used as it has an interesting texture
3. Tennis ball & Lemon - thought that a cut up tennis ball with a lemon as its inside would be interesting
4. Tea bag & Bag - From its name ( teabag ) thought of actually doing a bag form it
5. Lint roller & Speaker - had a used-up lint roller and the lint had similar shape and size of the speaker I had
6. Shuttlecock & Light bulb - the bottom part of the light bulb could be replaced with the base of the shuttlecock

REFLECTION

This week was mainly generating ideas before proceeding to the photo shooting part of the task. From researching online, I found many interesting ideas done and it opened my eye towards how objects could be combined to form a new product as I didn't know much about photo manipulation before this. From the lectures, I also learned a lot about photo shooting and how it didn't require professional equipment for one. In addition, I learned a lot about the different angles and lightings that photographers use in photoshoots. Besides that, it was fun looking around my house for random items that I thought would be a good mashups and from that I also noticed that there was endless possibilities of ideas I had just by the objects found in my house. It was generally a week of discovery and exploration of things and knowledge.
