Project 4 : Self-Tilted


TUTORIAL

In this weeks tutorial, we continued from last weeks After Effects tutorial and teacher showed us how to incorporate moving textures into our video as well as using the puppet tool. He provided a video of a river and a image of a leaf for us.

According to the tutorial video, I was applied the leaves into the composition but I edited the colours of the leaves to suit my composition as the original ones was too green. I've also made the leaves to rotate back and forth using the rotation in the transform layer.

After that, I added the clip of the water to my composition following the video tutorial teacher gave. I changed the opacity to be lower and edited the contrast to mask the water to the poster.

For the puppet tool, I did the effect for the fish last week, so I didn't change much for this compositions.

INSTRUCTIONS

Theme: Self-Titled


Self-titled is an exploration project for the students to express their own individuality and reflect their personality into digital art self-expression.

The main idea is to build up self-confidence and discover their interest.


There will be 3 parts of this project:


1. Part 1: Idea Development

    • Write a biography about yourself
    • Write a statement about your work
    • Search 3 moodboards that suits the style you're going for
2. Part 2: Design Direction
    • Create sketches of your mock up poster
    • Create digital posters based on your sketches - include progress shots
3. Part 3: Execution & Post Production
    • Import your Final Poster into After Effects
    • Develop the composition techniques using Digital Photography & Graphic Design
    • Animate your composition in After Effects
    • Include progress
4. Part 4: Submission
    • Include Poster as well as Artist's Statement
    • Include Video as well as Self Reflection
    • Include one (1) e-portfolio post including Artist's Statement & Self-Reflection
    • Submit 2 items in MS Teams:
      • Documentation in PPTX format
      • Final Output video in MP4 format

PROCESS WORK

This week, teacher introduced us to the final project that we have in this module. For this week, I started on writing the biography and the statement that is given from the slides.

Biography

Intro 
Please introduce yourself, where you come from, your interests, traits, etc.
I'm Xin Yean, born in Selangor, Malaysia. I like to watch movies and dramas especially if they have a strong message to portray and I also like to draw. Besides, my trait is that I have great memory specifically in past experiences, this trait causes me to remember almost everything the people around me say and do.

Paragraph 1
What is your passion?
My passion is to work on myself whether if it's hobbies like creating art or on my mental and physical health for as long as I live. This makes me open to explore new experiences and to stay open in meeting people with different backgrounds and interests. It also helps me in reflecting on my past actions and beliefs to achieve mental clarity.

Paragraph 2
What motivates you to achieve your dream?
I am motivated by the idea that there's no limit to exploration and to grow from my gathered experiences in life even if there are dark times.

Summary
How would you like to visualise your dream into an artwork?
I would like to use kintsugi to symbolise that scars should not be hidden, and I also would add flowers that blooms from my head to portray the different thoughts and experiences that I gathered. Besides that, I would incorporate me watering the flowers to show that I'm tending to the mind and experiences.


Work Statement

Intro
What style would you like to apply into your artwork?
I would like to apply ethereal style with my portrait, with a surrealism concept that involves my head being cut open with flowers growing out from it.

Paragraph 1
What is the concept/story behind your idea?
The concept is based on the act of self acceptance and personal growth with kintsugi to show that we should not hide scars, and flowers that blooms out of my head to portray the different thoughts and past experiences. Besides that, I would add a mini me watering the flowers to symbolise tending to. the mind and experience.

What is the message that you want people to understand?
By nurturing our inner world and accepting that scars are not shameful, personal growth will take place.

REFLECTION

For this week, there wasn't much to do as teacher just introduced us to the final task. But I learned a lot about After Effects in the tutorials and I found the process quite interesting and fun. Besides that,  I struggled a little while writing the biography and the work statement from the slides as I never really thought about my passion and motivation. But in the end, I was able to generate an idea that I wanted to proceed with doing the rest of the task.
