TECHNIQUES APPLIED

PROJECT 1A
For the physical collage, I used the framing composition to direct the attention of the viewers to the portrait. I also incorporated the shadows to my collage by placing glue to only certain parts of the cut out image. For the digital collage, I wanted to duplicate the building to act as a frame for the collage, I also added the lift to be opposite side of each other to visually balance the overall composition of the collage. Besides, I used the direct selection tool masked all the objects and applied the refine edge tool for the people in the collage and the fish. For the moon, I applied the elliptical marquee tool to crop out a circle from a textured background.

PROJECT 1B
For the Hearst Castle task,
I used the quick selection tool to mask both Shazam and myself to remove the background of the original photo. I then used colour balance adjustment to blend them into the background by making it slightly blueish, refined the hue and saturation of the water reflection, and added a ripple effect to replicate the natural movement of the water. I also added the shadows using the brush tool and applied gaussian blur for it.

For the recolouring task, I selected parts of the portrait using the quick selection tool and applied the refine edge tool around the edges of the selected parts. Then, I coloured the parts using brush tool with a clipping mask and the soft light blending mode.

REFLECTION

From this project, I was able to learn about composition and some photo editing techniques. Creating a collage physically helps me develop creativity, visual storytelling, and design awareness by thoughtful selection and arrangement of images that are from pre-existed print like magazines and newspaper. Besides that, I found that composition plays a key role in catching attention and creating unity in a design. Furthermore, I found that the photo editing exercises was fun to do. From adding myself into the picture of the mansion to the recolouring process of the black and white photo, I felt that I was able to manipulate photos effectively and gain a better understanding of how images can be transformed. The tasks improved my Photoshop skills and made me understand how thoughtful editing and composition can turn simple images into a meaningful visual piece.
