REFLECTION

Experience

Throughout the typography module, the exercises provided hands-on understanding on how type functions both visually and functionally. Although we had the creative freedom but functionality was also as equally important when creating a design which was a little hard to balance the both at first. I was a science stream student up until foundation, and although I've had art classes but I've never dealt with design seriously. It was an eye opener that we actually had to do quite a lot of research and reading before doing any tasks as previously I thought every idea has to be somehow squeezed out from our brains. Besides that, there were a lot of experimental thinking that helped me discover unexpected visual outcomes and possibilities although there were rules we had to follow for every task. There were struggles and challenges as sometimes I thought all of my ideas were basic and boring compared to my classmates or that I was not doing my best work, but its all a part of a learning process that I believe is important for me to advance further in the future.

Additionally, it was also interesting how little to no graphical elements that was needed or used to create a particular design as I was always focused on the pictures and or illustrations previously, it made me think deeply on how most designs could be kept simple yet impactful. There was also the learning experience from handling Adobe programs (mainly Adobe Illustrator and InDesign) and even FontLab from the last task that I thought was quite fun exploring and getting familiarised with. Furthermore, I actually enjoyed the recorded lectures that teacher gave, I liked learning about the history of typography and the terms of the letter anatomy. It felt like I was learning special additional facts about typography whilst doing the assignments.

Observations

From this module, I observed that typography is all about the details. From small adjustments in the spacing, scale and alignment to the layout of the texts, it all significantly affects readability and tone that a designer is trying to convey to the viewers. Besides, I realised that consistency is also important when designing fonts as it affects the overall harmony of the letterforms, there were angles of the strokes that I needed to pay attention to, there were also width of the strokes and the amount of curvature of some strokes that I needed to consider when creating letterforms. Throughout this process, I also realised that some textbooks are poorly formatted, which affects the reading comfort, focus and comprehension of the readers especially if they are a visual learner which I am myself. It was also interesting how I started to pay more attention to the type design from the products or signs and even books around me that I paid no mind to before. Through that, I've also discovered fonts and text layouts that were interesting and impactful. I've also observed how my classmates did their work and I am always amazed by the different ideas that could be thought of in just a single class, it really shows how there were endless possibilities that I could explore when creating my own design.

Findings

I've learned that typography functions both as a visual and communication system, where every decision made in designing influences the viewers perception and understanding. With the rules that were given for each task, it pushes me to design using what I had to be intentional and purposeful when designing. It provides a creative direction and prevents me from being overwhelmed by too many choices. Besides that, the tasks shifted my understanding of typography from a simple font selection to an intentional design process. I learned a lot about the "behind the scenes" in designing typefaces where I was exposed to the complexity behind letter construction and the importance of consistency and precision. Furthermore, I found out that exploration and experimentation is very crucial when designing. It was essential in discovering unexpected outcomes while I was able to refine my ideas through trial and errors which I think strengthened my visual sensitivity. In conclusion, typography requires an eye for details and a lot of patience to find a balance between functionality and expression to create a impactful and visually appealing design.
