Task 2B : Conceptual Photo Manipulation

LECTURE

In this weeks lecture, teacher introduced us to  After Effects.

Pre-compositing in Adobe Photoshop requires layers to be carefully arranged and clearly renamed to maintain an organised workflow and ensure smooth animation when the files are imported into After Effects. Similarly, in After Effects, all layers must remain well organised and properly synchronised with external software such as Photoshop and Illustrator. Since After Effects does not embed media but instead links to external files, good file and layer management is essential to prevent missing assets and to support an efficient animation process.

TUTORIAL

In this weeks tutorial, teacher moved on with teaching us how to use After Effects. We could use the collage teacher provided or the one we created for our Project 1A task. I decided to use my own collage from the previous task. At first we were instructed to change the size of our file into 1080 x 1920 pixels and resterise and flatten every layer that we had.

Then we saved and moved the psd. file into After Effects. We learned about how to edit the transform effects like rotation, scale, opacity and position to animate the collage. So, I decided to play around with the the animation by making the building move in to the frame by changng its position, opacity and scale. I also made the moons to rotate in different directions and the lift to blink by changing the opacity.

After that, I wanted the liquid texture and the fish to move, so I used the puppet warp tool to make some parts of the objects to move around.

PROCESS WORK

Continuing from last week, I decided to mask the background to change the its colour.

Figure 3.0 Screenshot of masking the background, Week 9 (21/11/2025)

Then, I coloured the background with the colour blue in colour mode as I thought it matches with the grey mat.

After that, I did the same with colouring the mat in soft light mode. I experimented with two different colours to see which one suits the overall picture. In the end, I chose the grey mat as it could portray dusts on the mat more clearly.

Then, I tried different variations in adding light streaks to the mat to show that the lint picked up some dusts. For the first attempt, I just made a block of light coloured rectangle at the back of the speaker.

Then, I thought of making oscillogram to incorporate the speaker part of the photo to support the overall. concept. But I struggled a lot with doing it as it was hard drawing straight diagonal lines and I realise I didn't know how a oscillogram would look like manipulated in that way. So, I found a reference picture in Pinterest and distort it to the angle I wanted and referenced it to draw on the mat. I also made the main part of the mat more darker to emphasise the oscillogram.

Then, I added a little grey to the body of the speaker to show that some dusts were sticked to it.

After that, I went on Adobe Illustrator to design the texts that I could place into the picture. I tried 2 fonts (Bodoni and Univers LT Std) and I also tried adding textures to the fonts ( Rough Pastels ).  I also made a mockup of my picture to know what colour font could work for my picture.

Then, I added the different design of text into the picture.

I decided to choose the 4th idea (furtherest to the right). After sending to teacher for feedback, he said to change the kerning of STICK so, I made some changes to the font.

FEEDBACK

After sending Mr. Fitri the edited photo with the texts, he said that the word "STICK" should be the same kerning as the "BEAT" but other than that it was good.

REFLECTION

In this week, I finish up the whole task. I learned a lot about how to blend images realistically and apply extra elements to create a convincing final product that was combined using 2 different objects. It also pushed me to find connections between the two items especially when creating the text for them. In addition, I also had fun designing the fonts to match the object and look cohesive to the overall concept. Although I struggled for some parts of this process (drawing the oscillogram and deciding the font used), it was fun especially when I was satisfied with the final outcome.
